One of the last few remaining Teochew porridge in Penang, Tai Buan Porridge has ceased its operation at Muntri Street last Friday after almost 60 years in business. Just as we thought Penang has lost another local treasure, the owner broke the news that he might make a comeback after taking a break.
Tai Buan Porridge Might Make a Comeback After Taking a Break:
Tucked in Muntri Street, Tai Buan Porridge, has been operating since 1960s. The current owner, Ong Tai Buan said it’s a family business where he took over from his father-in-law. Today, after almost 6 decades, Tai Buan Porridge has officially ceased its operation.
We spoke to him on the phone the other day, and Ong said that for now, his plan is to stay home and rest. Although, he did disclose that he is considering on making a comeback.
The pre-war shophouse that they were renting will undergo major renovations soon, so he had to hand over the shop back to the landlord. While he might be thinking to reopen Tai Buan Porridge, things are uncertain. He isn’t sure when will the renovations complete and finding another spot isn’t easy.
We’ll definitely miss uncle’s Teochew porridge, but for now, let him take a good rest. Make sure to follow us and stay tuned for any future updates. That’s all, take care and buh bye!
