By now, we’ve all read and heard the news about Penang’s iconic squatting Teochew porridge. Unfortunately, they’ve cleared out the stall and the space is even up for rent too. Knowing this, many Penangites are heavy-hearted in bidding farewell. But if you miss the good old days when you could enjoy a bowl of porridge while squatting down, we have news for you. There’s actually a wall mural dedicated to this squatting Teochew porridge, right here in George Town.
Spot Penang’s Last Squatting Teochew Porridge Wall Mural At M Summit
Ah Jin Porridge may come across as a humble stall serving Teochew porridge but what’s unique here is the eating experience. Instead of sitting on chairs, patrons are to have their legs drawn in creating a squatting-sitting position. This one-of-a-kind eating position dates way back into the past when coolies would enjoy a bowl of hearty porridge in a similar manner.
Of course, this garnered attention from both locals and tourists. In fact, 4 staff from M Summit Group voluntarily took up the task to commemorate this unique eatery by painting a wall mural after it.
The mural measures 121cm in height and 126cm in length. Additionally, the project began on 7th December 2019 with its completion date 2nd January 2020.
Look Out For More Wall Murals
If you’re all up to check it out, just make your way to M Summit and spot the wall beside the automated carpark of Menara M Summit. Also, there are several wall mural projects on their way. One will feature the infamous ‘Star Coffee’ stall, while another will feature the trams used to zip around George Town in the 1880s.
