Penang’s Last Remaining Squatting Teochew Porridge Has Ceased Its Operations

Penangites must have heard of this spot in Penang that serves Teochew porridge while customers enjoy them while squatting. Located along Magazine road right inside of Kedai Kopi Bee Hong is a no-name stall that has been serving porridge for close to 80 years. Sadly, another old generation eatery in Penang is ceasing its operations.

Ah Jin Porridge: Penang’s Only Squatting Teochew Porridge Has Ceased Operations

Teochew Porridge is a rare find in Penang and the way it is served is with a bowl of porridge (either plain or with chunks of sweet potato). Then, there will be various dishes to pair with the porridge, creating a unique eating experience.

Such is this stall in Kedai Kopi Bee Hong along Magazine Road that takes unique to a whole other level: patrons enjoy a bowl of porridge with their legs drawn in. This creates a squatting sitting position on stools stacked above one another.  As the one and only squatting Teochew porridge in Penang, the proprietors; an elderly couple has officially ceased its operations.

In fact, the stall in which the business used to operate even has a to-rent sign hanging out front. For loyal patrons who constantly enjoy a bowl of hearty porridge at this stall, it’s time to bid a good farewell and let the elderly couple take a good rest after decades of hard work.
