Lai H’ng Cafe in Penang Pays Homage to The Disappearing Teochew Culture:
Tucked in the Teochew Puppet & Opera House, Lai H’ng Cafe is situated at the back of the pre-war shophouse. Pre-COVID, the opera house serves as a platform to spread the stories and cultures of Teochew Opera and puppetry. There would be shows occasionally, especially during festivities. Due to the pandemic, they had to pause everything, hence the birth of Lai H’ng Cafe.
Just a heads up, they’re not your regular aesthetic cafes in Penang. Instead, the ambiance and direction of Lai H’ng relates close to the Teochew Opera House. You’ll find traditional Teochew Opera decor, colorful costumes and ornaments scrattered around the dining hall.
If you’re of Teochew descent, this place will bring back a lot of good memories. Serving an array of comfort food, these are the food that performers will normally eat, like oyster porridge, fried lor bak, sweet gingko yam, cai kuih and more.
Depending on the situation, the cafe might host Opera shows during the weekend in the coming months. Can you imagine yourself in a Opera House and dine to tradtional Teochew Opera shows? That would transport you back to the 1960s!
