Kek Lok Si Temple Lighting Ceremony Will Be Held Online This Year On 7th February

Chinese New Year is less than a week away. Just yesterday, the SOPs for CNY has been announced, read more about them here. This then dictates a rather different CNY for those celebrating. And this goes for the annual lighting ceremony at Kek Lok Si too. In 2021, instead of the usual visits to witness the lighting ceremony, this event will be held online instead.

Kek Lok Si Temple Lighting Ceremony Goes Online For CNY 2021

Every year without fail, Kek Lok Si Temple in Penang will be brightly lit up with tens and thousands of lights to welcome Chinese New Year. When this happens, locals and tourists alike would flock over to Kek Lok Si Temple for some pictures to glam up social media.

Usually, these lights comprise tens of thousands of LEDs, neon lights, and traditional Chinese lanterns. Also, the traditional lanterns which lined around the temple alternates between yellow and red thus creating a spectacular sight. This is further complemented by the modern multi-coloured lantern neon lights.

If visiting Kek Lok Si is on your to-do list every CNY, this year you would have to put a pause to that. With the temple being closed to the public, the lighting ceremony will be held virtually via Facebook Live this year. Though it might be a tad different to witness the illuminating lights virtually, the 130-year-old monastery will still be illuminated all the way up to the 33.6m-tall Kuan Yin statue and pavilion temple.

Temple Is Closed To The Public This Year

Temple trustee Datuk Seri Steven Ooi said that this event will begin at 7 PM on 7th February 2021. Kek Lok Si Temple will remain lit up until 11th March 2021. Have a safe Niu Year with your loved ones, foodies.
