What is Wei Lai Spicy Hotpot?

Wei Lai Spicy Hotpot

Started as a humble hotpot restaurant in Ipoh, Wei Lai Spicy Hotpot has since expanded to Penang and Johor. They’ve recently re-branded and introduced something new to their menu, which we’re going to explain later on. No fancy layout nor gimmicky names and design, the place literally speaks hotpot, with a cozy ambiance.

How Does One Indulge?

Some of you might think “it’s food, there’s no rules to it.” True, but those of you who are new to this, Wei Lai Spicy Hotpot does have a few tricks to getting the best dining experience. All you need to know is the three steps as follow:

Step 1: Order Food (duh)

By that we mean start picking what would like to have as the base. Did we mention they all come in mini claypots? Perfect for solo eaters or sharing of 2! They have 5 different base that range from chicken, pork ribs, to prawn, and fish head. Here comes the second dilemma, pick your level of spiciness. They have four different levels: non-spicy, slightly spicy, medium spicy and hot spicy.

We highly recommend giving the lamb claypot with medium spicy a go! Not only does the fresh-cut lamb slice adds a significant fragrance to the base, their secret spicy sauce portrays a really well balanced numbness and spiciness with a lot of herbs and spices included.

Step 2: Finish the First Pot

All orders are made-to-order, so be patient. The second step is your first entrée, a mala drypot served in a minipot. It’s the base that you’ve ordered simmered and stir-fried to a drypot, imagine all the flavors infused in it. While you can eat the ingredients on its own, we recommend pairing with rice or noodle, that’s if you have a bigger appetite.

Prefer seafood? Our fish head claypot pick didn’t disappoint. Fresh, quality fish heads were used, it gave a “burst” of flavor in the mouth and you break down the flesh.

Step 3: Add Spicy/ Normal Soup

Wiped the claypot clean? Great, but best to leave some sauces behind. Here comes the best part, turn your drypot into a hotpot. Wei Lai Spicy Hotpot cares for customer’s wallet they make every meal here worth-your-money. Simply choose to add either spicy (mala) soup or normal (herbal) soup to the claypot for second entrée.

Again, we would recommend sticking to the initial flavor that you’ve picked in step 1 to avoid any bad experiences. Then, proceed to the obvious, huge-looking refridgerator to add on any preferred steamboat ingredients. They have quite an array of selections, it’s like you’re having a legit steamboat (round two tho). Ingredients are definitely fresh and comes with a different pricing based on the color of the container.

PS: Did we mention they provide free flow of ice cream?
