This New Cafe In Penang With An Outdoor Picnic Vibe Serves Awesome Miso Mushroom Spaghetti, Artisanal Desserts & More!

Foodies, we don’t know about you, but the hardest question to answer has got to be “what to eat?” Well keep the “I don’t know” because we have a seriously good spot to recommend! Last week, we paid a visit to Cafe Mangga, an in-house cafe of the famed Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion. And boy, were we pleased by both their menu and their ambiance, you can say we walked out of the place with a happy tummy.

Cafe Mangga, An In-House Cafe Of Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion With A Casual, Laid Back Ambiance:

Like us, if this is your first time visiting Cafe Mangga, here’s a tip. Located along Lebuh Leith, they’re not nestled within the pristine Blue Mansion, but rather on your right before the main entrance to the mansion.

The word ‘mangga’ literally translates to mango in Malay, and Cafe Mangga is tucked underneath an old mango tree on the grounds of George Town’s iconic heritage mansion. Step inside the cafe and you’ll be pleased by its laid back vibe, and the outdoors pretty much resembles a picnic ambiance.

We also found out that the space is a rather new addition to the bustling cafe scene in Penang. They’ve just opened their doors a couple months back, offering a list of lip-smacking brunch and tea time delights.

A Look Into Their Menu:

We’ve ordered a couple of their bestselling dishes from the menu so here’s an in-depth review. We were immediately blown away by their Miso Mushroom Spaghetti! Field mushrooms and pasta are cooked to al dente in their white miso broth, topped with a generous amount of parmesan cheese, a sprinkle of spring onions and sesame seeds. It’s the best representation of East Meets West, packed with umami flavour in every bite.

We were told that Mangga’s Nasi Lemak is their signature dish. We first thought “how special can a plate of nasi lemak be?” Boy we were wrong. The essence lies within their Kapitan Curry Chicken, where mangoes were added as the key ingredient, delivering a semi-sweet, creamy and fragrant curry. It pairs so well with their coconut rice and other nasi lemak condiments, highly recommended!

Other brunch offerings like their Avocado Toast with Runny Yolk Egg and Roast Beef Sandwich are equally delicious as well. Do note that the portion of their Roast Beef Sandwich is huge, so it’s best to order it as a sharing dish, unless you’re extremely hungry during the time of your visit.

Looking for something that speaks Summer? Try out their Berry Yoghurt Bowl. It’s nourishing and packs a punch of protein and fibre, like granola, strawberry coulis, banana, mixed berries and chia seeds. Perfect if you’re looking for something healthy and refreshing.

There’s Always Room For Desserts At Cafe Mangga:

Leave some space in your belly because here comes dessert! Tea time lovers shouldn’t miss out Cafe Mangga signature Box of Treats. Featuring a selection of 8 types of petite cakes such as the Lychee Rose Choux au Craquelin, Pandan & Red Bean Swiss Roll, and Yuzu & Chocolate Truffles. Pair it with a cup of tea and enjoy the sweet treats under their huge mango tree outdoors.

Their Yuzu Pandan Coconut Mousse Cake caught our eye immediately with its artisanal shape and aesthetically pleasing hues of green. Experience layers of flavours and textures as they melt in your mouth. The fragrant pandan coconut mousse added with Japan’s favourite citrus flavour will make your palate dance!

Chocolate aficionados have to try their Valrhona Chocolate Bons Bons. They have a list of unique flavours to offer. Pair it with a cup of coffee and it’ll be the perfect way to end your experience at Cafe Mangga.

If you love cafe hopping and a good brunch or tea time, we highly recommend you foodies pay a visit to Cafe Mangga. Overall, our experience at the cafe was a blast, so it’s definitely Penang Foodie approved! Don’t forget to share this with your friends and plan a trip down to Cafe Mangga.
