One of the coolest cafes in Penang that opened in 2024, The Founders Hutton is a renowned cafe originating from Johor! Back in Johor, The Founders Cafe even hosted the Malaysian Royal Family as well as international and local celebrities like Jay Chou, Mizz Nina and more. Located at Hutton Lane, their Penang outlet retains the historical architecture of the heritage building while adding in Balinese elements in every corner. Their al-fresco area is beautiful and even features an outdoor pool! Personally, we’d recommend their “World’s Best Bagels”, classic cinnamon rolls and freshly-baked pastries~

Norm Micro Roastery is definitely a local favourite in the Penang cafe list! Set in a spacious industrial looking shophouse, there’s lots of bright natural sunlight that shines through high glasshouse-style ceilings. This cafe has everything you need – good coffee, delicious mains and great desserts. If it’s your first time here, we recommend trying out their signatures like the Norm Essential, Prawn & Pumpkin Risotto, Mojo Pulled Pork Benedict, Tiramisu and more~ Oh and you can also bring your furkids along on your cafe date here!

Those touring around will definitely come across Ang Ang’s Roastery outlets that scattered all over Penang! They first started in Bukit Mertajam before expanding to Penang island, Butterworth, Simpang Ampat and Kulim, Kedah. Yes, this means that Ang Ang’s Roastery is a popular coffee spot loved by many! Most of their outlets are pretty aesthetic, but you can check out the Tanjung Bungah branch for its spacious al-fresco area that’s great for chill hangouts especially at night!

5. Oceano Symphony

Hidden behind a Chinese Temple in Tanjung Bungah, Oceano Symphony is a popular Balinese-inspired cafe that offers a relaxing time by the beach with stunning sea view! Weekends are usually very busy here, but it’s definitely a good place to chill on sunny days in Penang with loved ones and furry friends. There’s even direct access to the beach so you can also go for a stroll together after getting some food and coffee too!

Another one of Penang’s most hyped cafes in 2024 is Batu.pg that overlooks an uninterrupted scenic sea view nearby Lava Mansion! This place is definitely more secluded as compared to cafes near the popular Batu Ferringhi Beach, so it’s a good option for those who would like to have their own space while enjoying the beautiful Penang sea view. It’s even complete with a shady sundeck that’s perfect for those who prefer sitting outdoors!

If you love nature, then you need to check out this new Japanese vibes coffee yard situated in Cherok To’ Kun, Bukit Mertajam! The concept here is return to nature and creating a healing environment, so you get to connect with like-minded friends and enjoy specialty coffee, handcrafted beverages or desserts! Shan Li is a special place as they’re only open from the evening onwards, offering a tranquil and relaxing healing spot after work. Fyi, the owner is a coffee art champion who owns another popular cafe called Dua Sua Ka~

The YardHouse Kitchen and Bar is filled with cosy and whimsical decor that makes you feel like you’re dining right in the middle of Peter Rabbit’s little cottage home. It’s a nice place to sit and enjoy the vintage vibes while savouring Italian dishes or cute desserts~

This aesthetic cafe has just opened for a few months, yet they’re receiving plenty of good reviews everywhere! You’ll notice that the place is decorated with an industrial theme in mind, focusing on white, grey and black decorations. There is also a pretty artistic rock-like centre piece that is actually a plant and is currently still growing-in-process! As this place is a roastery, we’d recommend trying out their specialty coffee that’s made using their self-roasted coffee beans. They have also expanded their menu selections recently, so now they serve plenty of main options like Western dishes, rice bowls, tacos, burgers and more~

Joies Sourdough Bakery Cafe is one of the must-try meatless cafes in Penang! They’ve been around for some time, serving delicious options such as Creamy Carbonara, Vege Ragu Pasta, Tempeh Bolognese Pasta which are all made using their homemade sauce. As they are a bakery that focuses on Sourdough, they’re mostly popular for their Sourdough Bread paired with toppings like Onion Jam, Creamy Egg Mayo, Vege Ragu Melt and more!

Macallum Connoisseurs is not only a cafe, but also a roastery and a coffee academy too!

Deemed as the longest cafe in Penang, the legendary China House occupies three heritage buildings combining a cake house, restaurant, bar, art gallery and mini library! Most of us usually drop by for an after-meal treat as they serve over 30 types of homemade whole cakes displayed in glass panels. Their Signature Tiramisu is the most popular here, but to be honest all their cakes are delicious so you can just pick the one that calls out to you the most! Oh and this place is especially packed after dinner on weekends, so it might be best to expect a queue if you’re visiting at night~

22. The Alley 

Tucked away on 5 Stewart Lane near the Goddess of Mercy Temple, The Alley is a cosy coffee spot that’s popular for their signature churros and coffee! Each set of churros come with a dip and a topping, so you get to choose from chocolate dip, caramel dip, oreo, kong teng and more. Their churros sell out pretty fast, so if you don’t get the chance to enjoy them, we recommend trying out their Key Lime Pie instead!

23. Dua Sua Ka X De Antique

This vintage industrial themed cafe is called Dua Sua Ka, which literally translate to its location, Bukit Mertajam in Mandarin! It’s actually one of the OG cafes in the BM area, as they’ve been around since 2021. The cafe boasts a glasshouse in between building, where you can actually see through the interior from the outside. and They’re popular for their signature Watermelon cakes, but it’s also a great place to enjoy mains and coffee too!

24. Insideout coffee

Insideout Coffee is one of the biggest cafes you can find in Butterworth, Penang! It’s situated within a huge industrial-themed glasshouse, making it a great spot to relax and vibe during the weekends. For those who didn’t know, the cafe was previously caught on fire and had to go through some refurbishing works before they made their comeback around April 2024. They mainly serve Western cuisines and breakfast options, but you can also come for their signature coffees and desserts too~

Hotel Mokozoyo is pretty popular among tourists in Penang, but did you know that there is an aesthetic sandwich bar here? The Sandwich Bar by Mokozoyo is a great place if you’re a fan of sandwiches and taking pics for the gram, as this place gives hipster vibes with an industrial-themed exterior that contrasts the retro warm-toned interior. Komichi Tea House is a Japanese-style hidden teahouse that serves authentic Japanese tea sourced from the owner’s family farm in Toyota, Japan.
