With the rainy season these days, we bet a lot of you are craving for comfort food. Porridge, though not a regular food that you’ll consume daily, some like to say it’s the “sick food.” We don’t know you, but what’s better than a bowl of hot, thick but smooth fragrant porridge that instantly warms you up? There’s a lot of good porridge in Penang, some with different style and background. So here’s our 10 Best Porridge in Penang recommendation.

10 Best Porridge in Penang Perfect for Rainy Season:

#1 Chok Kee Porridge

Cr: @sabaheats

A humble setup tucked in Kimberley Street, Chok Kee has quite a bit of history, hence explain the simple, rundown shophouse. They have quite a bit of offering for porridge. Bestsellers are the roasted pork intestine porridge and century egg porridge. While the roasted pork intestine porridge has a sweet finish, their intestine is crispy and fragrant. Century egg is thick and creamy, both are perfect. Do expect a little waiting during popular hours due to limited seats and Chok Kee is quite a popular porridge in Penang.

#2 Cintra Street Chicken and Fish Porridge

One of editors favourite porridge in Penang, Cintra Street Chicken and Fish Porridge is now run by the second generation. Unlike other porridge that needs other condiments for flavors, this porridge is cooked with chicken broth for hours. It has a sweet, fragrant note. There are only three types of porridge, chicken, fish or mix. We suggest to order a side of chicken because their chicken is super tender and smooth. The shop is also quite comfortable and clean, so eat with ease.

Now this might sound random but those who’re a regular might know how good their oyster porridge is. Dark, golden brown broth filled with generous amount of oyster, not those teeny tiny bits that other stalls offer. Seasoned with pepper, fried garlic and spring onion. Dip the cakoi into the porridge for extra kick and flavors, so good. Start your day right with a bowl of good oyster porridge.

Another Teochew porridge in Penang, probably a little fancier, they are air-conditioned. Same rules applies to New Day, you get either porridge or rice and order side dishes to pair and complete your meal. New Day is more of an economic rice style, offering wide array of dishes. Many recommend their deep fried fish and black sauce pork. Save this up, you’re gonna need it on your next visit.

#7 Ah Nam Claypot Frog Porridge

Lordson Tan

Here comes another editor’s favourite place for porridge in Penang, and many are unaware of this spot. From afar, Ah Nam looks a bit gloomy, but don’t let it set you back because their claypot frog is bomb! Again, you can either go with porridge or rice but we recommend opting porridge. Their dark, soy-glazed frog cooked with chili and other ingredients are so tantalizing it will intrigue your appetite. Another gem, which is the claypot eel, is as good, if not, better.
