We are always looking forward to the weekends. Nothing beats the idea of kicking off your working shoes and putting on party shoes. Without a doubt, there are many speakeasies and clubs around Penang. But, where are you going to find a serene spot to sip some good Pina Colada? No worries. We got you, fam! We are about to introduce you something really good!
Chili Head Social Bar & Eatery
Tucked in the calm and collected Straits Quay, Chili Head Social Bar & Eatery serves Thai food that packs a punch. Moving away from the conventional Thai restaurant vibes, the social bar and eatery exudes high-class settings with heavy wooden furniture and tasteful Thai decorations. On one corner, you will find a well-painted lady wearing traditional Thai outfit painted by famous mural artist, Thomas Powell.
Or, you can find yourself seating outside, overlooking Straits Quay’s iconic marina, parked with yachts in all shapes and sizes. If you’re looking for a spot to unwind and relax, this is the spot to be! We love the fact that there’s soft music playing in the background. It creates a very relaxing ambiance. If you’re looking for a good dance, there are nights with live bands as well!
Tickle your palates with extraordinary Thai delights
Now, we are getting to the most important part. It is time to talk about food! Chili Head Social Bar & Eatery specialises in Thai cuisine. Run by the same management of Tree Monkey at Teluk Bahang, the food is guaranteed to be full of flavours. We had the opportunity to sample their famous dishes and beverages, including Pork Platter, Sizzling Beef, and Tom Yum Martini!
1. Pork Platter
The Pork Platter makes the perfect centerpiece dish. Comprise of four different pork dishes, the appetising dish also comes with glutinous rice and dipping sauces. Kicking off, we have pork skewers, a must-order in every Thai restaurant. It has Chiang Mai Sausages, a hard to find Thai delicacy in Penang. Of course, pork neck and pork balls are an absolute must!
How to eat it: You will need to roll a ball with the glutinous rice, and eat it together with the dishes. Don’t forget about the sauces!
2. Sizzling Beef
One of their bestselling dishes, the sizzling marinated beef cooked with garlic, onions, capsicums, and peppercorns. The ingredient definitely complements the lean meat really well. If you’re a having a meal for two, this is a good dish to order as there are many things to eat on a single plate! Have some meat and vegetables. That’s what we call a well-balanced meal.
3. Lime & Chili Fish
Oh, this is one of the dishes that you will need to order, regardless of any Thai restaurant that you step into. The centerpiece dish comes with a candle right at the bottom of the platter, keeping it hot. For the fish, you can choose between sea bass and snapper! The fish is perfectly fresh, and the soup has a strong flavour. It is a little more sour, than spicy.
4. Papaya Salad (Som Tum)
Have you tried Som Tum before? The spicy salad is made from shredded unripe papaya. In Thailand, this dish was listed as number 46 on World’s 50 Most Delicious Foods compiled by CNN just last year! Here, the papaya salad is mixed with similar ingredients in Thailand such as garlic, long beans, tomatoes, dried shrimps, peanuts, and chili lime dressing. Have it as an appetiser, or as a dish for your main meals!
5. Spices & Herbs Prawns
If you enjoy eating succulent prawns without the need to peel off the shells, here’s the dish that you’re looking for. However, you cannot find this on the menu. Instead, you will find Spices & Herbs Seafood. If you love prawns only, you can make a special request! This dish is stir-fried with garlic, chili, finger roots, and peppercorns. It is something that you’ll enjoy eating with steamed rice, for sure.
6. Triple Thai Desserts
It is time for the best part of any meals, desserts! In Chili Head Social Bar & Eatery, you don’t have to think of the Thai desserts that you want to order, ’cause you have them on all in one plate. Introducing Triple Thai Desserts, it comes with mixed of mangoes, sticky rice, and coconut ice-cream topped with red rubies and coconut milk. You get the best of Thailand in just one order. So satisfying!
Let’s get the night started
What is a bar without a live band and an interesting concoction of cocktails? The social bar and eatery serves some interesting choices, including Tom Yum Martini, and Sunset Paradise. If you love a little spice in your cocktail, Tom Yum Martini is the drink that you need to go for. Made with lime juice, lemongrass, chili, and kaffir lime leaves, it has some interesting notes.
There are so many other in-house cocktails that we would love to try in the future. Some of them include Chili Mojito, Absolute Thai, and Roselle Mojito. Looking for something without alcohol? Check the mocktails list, comprise of drinks made with fresh fruits and herbs. We have tried Sunset Paradise, and it feels just refreshing after a hearty meal! Time for some music! Check out all the upcoming performances on their Facebook page.
