It is a simple dish that most locals had during their childhood days until today. 1. Khoon Pastry House

Khoon Pastry House has been around since 1975 and if you ask your parents who grew up in Penang, they will tell you about this hidden gem. This pastry house was focusing more on selling pastry but in recent years, they started selling Hainanese food as well. One of their signature dishes is definitely the Hainanese chicken chop.

2. Yeng Keng Cafe Bar

This cafe is located inside a boutique hotel and is known for serving Hainanese cuisine. What is a Hainanese cuisine without chicken chop? Perfectly seasoned batter with homemade gravy that pairs perfectly. Not forgetting the peas that can be found in every plate of Hainanese western dishes as well.

This cafe is quite packed almost every day and night hence you can head over to their other branch as well, Harvest Times which is a walking distance. Who doesn’t love some good western food that is reasonably priced? I know I do!

4. Yaw’s Roast & Grill

A hidden gem that is only known to locals, Yaw’s Roast & Grill runs their business from their home. It feels like exactly like having a meal at a person’s house without being creepy. The cozy environment will help make the meal better because you’re surrounded by all the plants that have been planted and taken care of by the owner. Don’t forget to try their chicken pie as well but it sells out pretty fast so you’ll probably have to be early.

5. Hai Onn Restaurant

Hai Onn serves authentic Hainanese cuisine at a reasonable price. Most people from the older generation will know about this place as they would come here with their family when they were younger. The presentation of their dishes leans more on the old school side as well. One of their many signature dishes is definitely this chicken and pork chop. Don’t forget to order some ‘roti bakar’ as well to dip it with the homemade chicken chop’s gravy.

Located in a heritage hotel, this restaurant serves all kinds of Hainanese dishes. Besides their signature chicken rice, they have Hainanese chicken chop as well that you should definitely check out the next time you’re there. The crispy batter and homemade gravy will leave you wanting more.

Instead of the typical green peas, carrots, and corns, this stall serves their chicken chop with baked beans instead.
