Truly a new kid on the block, Q Bistro Nasi Kandar in Gurney Drive is actually their first-ever outlet in Penang outside Klang Valley. It is a modern style Mamak restaurant that proudly brings all Malaysian’s favourite menu under one roof. Here, you can find halal dim sum, nasi kandar, Thai food and even western dishes.

Don’t leave without trying their Curry Fish Head. The generous portion of the fish head is cooked to the right amount of sweetness, spiciness, and savoriness. People around the neighbourhood are no stranger to this coffee shop. Song River is one of the Kopitiam in Penang that gets really crowded in the morning and during lunch hour. The white Bah Kut Teh, Steamed Fish Bee Hun, hearty Char Hor Fun and Heh Cho (Prawn Roll), they are all good! Besides, you can also get the ever-famous roasted chicken wing during the night. The chicken is well-marinated and crispy, every bite is so juicy and flavourful. How good you ask? Finger licking good!

Hidden amidst the bustling Gurney Drive, Crepe Cottage is a stilted charming house that serves homemade and extensive range of crepes. You’ll be spoilt for choice at this spot with the Mango Crepe, Coconut Parcel, Hot Apple and more but yet the Mango Cup is still winning. The crepe is served in the form of a huge cup stuffed with fresh mango cubes and topped with mango ice cream. Perfectly matched with whipped cream and chopped nuts, it’s heaven!

9. Carnation Bah Kut Teh

Spanning more than 25 years, this is the humble stall in Gurney Drive where most of the locals and tourists will come here to enjoy Bak Kut Teh for their breakfast. The broth is perfectly boiled for hours with assorted cuts of pork, herbs and spices to create the perfect combination of sweet and bitter tastes. You can either eat it with white rice or yam rice, both equally good! They also offer the dry version of bah kut teh so maybe you can try them the next time you’re there!

Restaurant 77 has been around for three decades and nothing much has changed from their recipes. While there are other dishes that taste amazing, their curry fish head is a signature dish. Inside this bowl of flavourful curry, a chunky fish head can be found with okras, tomatoes and lots of onion. Simple and hearty, you’ll be leaving this spot wanting more because of how tasty it is.
