Put those gym and calorie thoughts behind, all in the name of self-love. We’ve finally tried out the highly raved about barbecue spot. Penangites might be familiar with their Chinese name BBQ Bar 串越时光 Penang. So hop right on the train as we embark on this food journey!

You guys know the drill, we got to start off with a little introduction. Tucked in Bukit Mertajam, this igloo-themed bar with low-lit neon space sets off a futuristic vibe. Speaking of futuristic, each table is equipped with an automatic barbecue griller! The auto-rotating griller allows a hands-free experience, so all you need to do is just place those skewers on top and be patient. This one-of-a-kind experience reminds us so much of roasted chicken, but yakitori style.

Enough talking, let’s feast! BBQ Bar 串越时光 Penang got us really pumped we might have ordered a bit too much……we meant A LOT.
The ordering process was pretty much a no-brainer since the menu is very straightforward. Tick on the items you want, specify the quantity and you’re all set. Did we mention that BBQ Bar 串越时光 Penang offers a smokeless barbecue thanks to its carefully selected charcoal and almost-perfect ventilation? None of us walked out with our clothes and hair smelling like roasted beef.
Another highlight of the whole dining has got to be their seasonings and sauces. You know how some places are really stingy with condiments? That’s not the case here. They offer 3 types of homemade sauces and bottles of seasonings. Mix and match to find out which suits you or simply ask their friendly staffs for recommendation.
Meats were ready and so was our tummy. We highly recommend their New Zealand lamb stick and Australia beef ribeye. Those meats took on all the smoky flavor, and when paired with seasonings, we were blown away.
Not a fan of seafood? Try out the Scallop with Glass Noodle, grilled. The glass noodle soaked up all the juices from the freshly grilled seafood and has a hint of natural sweetness. This was by far one of the best dish we had that we actually got ourselves more.
Other choices such as oyster and crab are also available, at a wallet-friendly price. They’re grilled under charcoal while the skewers rotate above them.

Time to Get Cheesy:
It only makes sense for BBQ Bar 串越时光 Penang to whip up some cheese for the best barbecue experience. Add a few extra bucks and you’ll get yourself to dip your skewers in some ooey, gooey cheese. Cheese made almost everything on the table tasted better, and it was worth it.
Wait…There’s New Menu!
We legit ordered almost every item on the menu, and we blamed it on our adrenaline. Just when we thought BBQ Bar 串越时光 Penang is all barbecue, they came out with hotpot, in conjunction with their First Anniversary celebration. This fairly new menu sounds about right, given barbecue and steamboat is match made in heaven.
One gets to order up to two soup bases, and while you can throw and dip the ingredients in, this bar thought “hey why not do it the lok–lok style?” Genius, we would say, at least the entertaining elements were there. If you’re confused, don’t worry, let the picture do its justice.
Big eaters, fret not. Barbecue and hotpot is all fun and flavorful, some would prefer the tummy to be utterly filled. Fried rice, noodles and Korean-inspired ramen are all in the menu, including some hot plates for the ultimate experience.
One can never miss out a glass or two of booze in every barbecue or hotpot session, they’re the perfect combo. The space also offers live band every Thursday to Sunday, so you can get your tummy filled and ears blessed at the same time.

This was hands down one of the best barbecue experience we ever had. BBQ Bar 串越时光 Penang offers not only good food, but a splendid experience. They’re like the one-stop spot to get everything fixed, from service to food, booze and last but not least, live band sessions. Next time if you’re caught up with dinner suggestions, BBQ Bar 串越时光 Penang it is. Though price is on the higher side, we highly recommend to try it out at least once.
