Review: The Menu

Photo: Penang Foodie

Though known for High Tea, we had the opportunity to try out Suffolk House’s 5-course Set Dinner. The whole course was prepared and attended by Executive Chef Mathijs Nanne. We tried both starters, let’s begin with Laksa Fish Mousse Tartlet. Inspired by local flavors, the tartlet itself reminds us of a familiar flavor, Otak-Otak. When paired together with roselle and ginger emulsion, along with papaya salad, it does resemble the taste of laksa, in a refreshing manner.

Seared Tuna, Smoked Salmon Tartare, and Masala Paneer Croquette, on the other hand, is a savoury combination.  Aromatic and delightful on the taste buds, it’s definitely a palate opener for us.

Moving on to Soup of The Day, which was a tomato-based puree served with sourdough granola and thyme. Citrusy and creamy, it’s light on the palate, enough for us to anticipate for our main course.

Unlike other course menus, they have quite a selection when it comes to main course. We picked the Oven-Baked Salmon and Confit Duck Leg. The first is pretty self-explanatory, freshly baked salmon paired along with watercress mousseline. Crushed baby potato served on the side somehow absorbed all the essence of the dish and was really flavorful.

The latter, Confit Duck Leg, served us a melt-in-your-mouth moment. The bird was fatty and packed with flavors, and beetroot mash along with greens served somehow cut the grease and balanced the palate.

We ended our mains with a glass of wine and of course, dessert. A house specialty, Bittersweet Chocolate and Nutmeg Pave happen to be Chef Mathijs’s signature too. Using fresh nutmeg fruit, the dessert was indulgent, with hints of refreshing nutmeg at the aftertaste.
