We’ve seen countless establishments falling victim to the pandemic. One of them sadly is Penang’s iconic POPULAR Bookstore at Komtar which will be ceasing its operations on 28th November 2021.
POPULAR Bookstore At Komtar, Penang To Close Down After 30 Years
As Penangites, we share the same pride in many things including both street food and landmarks including the POPULAR bookstore at Komtar. This particular outlet is a safe haven for many book lovers from all walks of life.

POPULAR was established in January 1984 and has since become a household name in Malaysia with over 97 stores nationwide. In fact, POPULAR was listed in the Malaysian Book of Records as the largest bookstore chain.

With different genres like fiction, non-fiction, textbooks, revision books, children’s books available in English, Chinese, and Malay languages, it is no wonder why POPULAR is a one-stop bookstore for most of us.

In addition to that, there is also a large selection of magazines, stationery, gifts, and many more. While there are several POPULAR bookstore outlets in Penang such as in Gurney Plaza, Queensbay Mall, and more, nothing can compare to the one at Komtar.

It has been around for 30 years meaning most of us grew up alongside this outlet. As all good things will eventually come to an end, this post by netizen Alice LI mentioned that POPULAR at Komtar will be closing down on 28th November 2021.
