As Penangites, we’ve all heard; and some of us, have grown up alongside Gama. Just last year, Gama has been listed as the oldest supermarket and departmental store in the Malaysia Book of Records. And now, the latest news related to Game is that fellow Penangite and executive chairman of GAMA Group, Datuk Andrew Lim Tatt Keong will be acquiring the food retail business of DFI Group in Malaysia. In case you’re wondering, DFI Group owns several notable retail brands including Mercato, Giant, and Cold Storage.
Penang-Born Datuk Andrew Lim, To Acquire Giant & Cold Storage Brands
To break it down, in Malaysia, the group operates 40 Giant hypermarkets, 40 Giant Mini stores, eight Mercato, two Cold Storages, and one TMC in Bangsar. Once the acquisition is completed, Datuk Andrew Lim will take on the 2,500 Giant, Cold Storage, and Mercato team members. The deal is set to be completed by March 2023.
In a statement by the pan-Asian retailer,
“The local retail group shares similar beliefs as DFI in delivering great quality, service and value to customers.
“By bringing these businesses together under experienced local ownership, both customers and team members (staff) will continue to benefit from the positive changes to Giant, Cold Storage, and Mercato that have taken place in recent years, forging an exciting platform for future growth,” it said.
Lim is currently the group deputy chairman of SOGO Department Store Sdn Bhd as well as the executive chairman of the GAMA Group. He first became the group deputy chairman of SOGO Department Store Sdn Bhd in 2002. Since then, SOGO has become one of the leading retailers in Malaysia.

He added that he and his new team members have pledged to add value and enhance the respective brand equities of Cold Storage, TMC, Giant, and Mercato brand names in Malaysia.
