Plastic Bags Will Be Charged RM1 Each In Penang Starting January 2021

Change to reusable bags instead

Hi friends! As we are all well aware, since 2009, 20 sen will be charged for each plastic bag that you get at a retailer store. This money is then used by the state government to fund environmental management efforts. Additionally, last year, it was decided that no plastic bags will be given on Monday. However, starting next year, each plastic bag will be charged RM1.

According to the State Environment Committee chairman, Phee Boon Poh, starting from 1st January 2021 in Penang, you will have to pay RM1 for every plastic bag that you get at the cashier. From Mondays to Wednesdays no plastic bag will be given at shops, supermarkets, and shopping centers no matter how much you want to pay. Meanwhile, plastic bags will be available only between Thursdays and Sundays.

Penang’s no-plastic-bag effort is not enforced by law. So consumers and businesses will do it voluntarily. Said by Consumers Association of Penang (CAP), the initiative is very much welcomed. “We are happy with the no-plastic-bag campaign and we hope that one day, businesses will stop the use of plastic bags.” Hopefully, with the new initiative, Penangites will be more aware and practice carrying their own reusable bags during grocery shopping trips.

  1. I really wish people in Malaysia would be more concerned with plastic packaging and start boycotting at least somehow companies that do not care at all. Also the take away option should widely support options that are more eco friendly than tons of different types of plastic. All the best to Malaysia
