Khun De Thai Restaurant at Gurney Paragon

We are sure that you have heard, seen, or even tried this restaurant before. The thriving brand has more three branches all over Penang, and one branch located in Kedah. Its iconic logo carries the roof of a pagoda, with two elephants on the side – very Thai! The authentic Thai restaurant recently has opened another spot in Gurney Paragon, and it oversees the notable Gurney Drive stretch.

Comfortable environment with Gurney Drive’s view

Tucked on the end of the second floor at Gurney Paragon, the restaurant offers a comfortable environment. The indoor dining area is huge with tables that accommodate up to eight people, and a VIP room that accommodates up to ten people comfortably! Outdoor seatings are also available, and it is delightful ’cause there is sea wind. We think that breezy is the right word!

We’re on a seafood diet, we see it, we eat it!

The seafood range in Khun De Thai Restaurant is pretty impressive. You will find crabs cooked in glass noodles, fishes steamed in spicy lemon sauce, and prawns cooked in salted egg. Let’s not forget about other Thai favourites such as pandan chicken, deep-fried kangkung, and red tom yam! The lunch menu has a daily rotation with price starting at RM 10.90.

Claypot Glass Noodle Crab

If you haven’t tried Claypot Glass Noodle Crab before, this is one of the best spots in Penang to try. As suggested by the name, Claypot Glass Noodle Crab comprise of springy and chewy glass noodles! The crab, which is approximately 800 gram, is super fresh and has a lot of meat. Surely, both of them are perfectly paired together. It has a hint of peppery taste!

Curry Fish Head

Not many people would know how to enjoy a good Curry Fish Head. After all, eating a fish head is a very tricky business. Similar to the crab, the fish head is fresh as well, as you can easily remove the fish meat from the bones. Apart from the fish head, the curry is also heavy with other ingredients such as okras. We love having curry with plain rice. It goes so well together!

Prawn Spicy Sour Soup

This is not for the fainted hearted as it is probably the spiciest dish that Khun De Thai Restaurant has to offer. The Prawn Spicy Sour Soup is made with fresh prawns, and beaten fried egg is layered at the bottom of the pot. Tasting the soup itself, you can feel the chilli burning on your tongue! This is definitely a good alternative from conventional tomyam.

Mini Otak-Otak

Super cute is probably an understatement. The famous dish is normally wrapped around banana leaf, but the restaurant took another approach. It is served with a clay cooking pot, with mini lids encasing each otak-otak. The well-flavoured otak-otak has a very chewy texture! The fish cake is served with a prawn placed right on top. Ah, so atas.

Deep-Fried Kangkung

Khun De Thai Restaurant has a lot of fresh greens to choose from. To be exact, there are two pages in total. Many, huh? However, we have opted for an appetizer, Deep-Fried Kangkung. Anyone who loves Thai food surely knows that Deep-Fried Kangkung is very delicious, especially paired with Thai chilli sauce. It is the same in Khun De Thai Restaurant. Crunchy, and flaky!

Price: RM 12.00 (Small) | RM 18.00 (Large)

Desserts are really good too!

It is not Thai food if it doesn’t end with something sweet. Khun De Thai Restaurant offers Thai famous desserts including the refreshing nangka dessert and mango glutinous rice. The latter one is pretty marvelous as the glutinous rice are rolled into balls, with original and pandan flavours! Oh, did we mention that there is free flow of ice-cream? Yes, please!

Come over for some good seafood!

You will be happy to know that this is the only Khun De Thai Restaurant that is pork-free. Seafood and poultry all the way! We love the food and environment here, and we hope that you will love it too. This restaurant will be a perfect spot for birthday and other happy celebrations.
