How excited are you for the Chinese New Year? When it comes to CNY, there’ll be plenty of feasting, Yee Sang tossing and red packets as well as munching on our favourite CNY cookies endlessly. Talking about it makes us so excited! As a fellow Penangite, aside from our scrumptious food, we’re also really proud of Kek Lok Si. And every year without fail, Kek Lok Si Penang will be lit up as a way to welcome yet another new year.
Ring In CNY With Bright Lights At Kek Lok Si Temple Penang
Last year, the temple has taken a safe approach to broadcast its lighting ceremony online as it was closed to the public. But this year, the temple will once again be open to the public from 8.30 AM onwards on 28th January and will be beautifully lit up for a month. So, let’s start planning a visit to check out the stunning lights!

Wherever you look, there will be bright lights all around and this makes us a tad more excited to celebrate CNY.

In case you’re wondering, these lights comprise tens of thousands of LEDs, neon lights, and traditional Chinese lanterns. Also, the traditional lanterns which lined around the temple alternate between yellow and red thus creating a spectacular sight. This is further complemented by the modern multi-coloured lantern neon lights.

Kek Lok Si Temple, Penang’s pride is made up of a 120-feet tall bronze statue of Kuan Yin, the Goddess of Mercy. The 130-year-old monastery will be illuminated all the way up to the 33.6m-tall Kuan Yin statue and pavilion temple. And when it’s lit up, everyone will involuntarily stop whatever they’re doing to admire its majestic beauty.
