Remember when the iconic squatting Teochew porridge ceased its operations last year, we got all sad that Penang has lost another old generation eatery? Well here’s a piece of good news. Foodies, you can now enjoy your Teochew porridge in a “squatting” position once more as the stall along Magazine Road is back!
Penang’s Only Squatting Teochew Porridge Is Back With A New Operator:
Just last February, Penang’s only squatting Teochew Porridge announced its last day of operation after serving porridge to loyal patrons for close to 80 years. The no-name stall in Kedai Kopi Bee Hong got its fame from its unique “dine-in style.” Customers are to enjoy their bowl of porridge with their legs drawn in. This creates a squatting sitting position on stools stacked above one another.
According to Buletin Mutiara, a new operator, Ooi Yew Meng aka ‘Ah Meng’ took up the stall in April 2021. Ah Meng, 68, has been in the business for around 20 years. He used to run a stall serving Teochew porridge and economic rice in KL for 13 years before coming to Penang. In fact, he had a stall in Macalister Road before moving into the current space.
Ah Meng said he’ll continue to sell his authentic Teochew porridge and economic rice at the stall along Magazine Road. The best part is, patrons will still get to enjoy their meal in a “squatting” position, just like the old times to keep the tradition.
Foodies, if you’d like to visit the stall, take note that its operating hour is from 9 am to 4 pm, Thursday to Monday. Let us know in the comments your dining experience!
