Penang Island City Council officially turned Carnarvon Street into one-way street last year and since then, they had plans on relocating hawkers on Chulia Street due to safety issues. Chulia Street is a busy two-way street, with heavy traffics and busses driving past every hour.

Tables and chairs are set up close by the roadside, a lot of customers feel unsafe dining there, with vehicles constantly driving past their back. The hawker scene has somehow obstructed traffic as well and cleanliness is yet another issues. Hawkers will set up their stalls right in front of other shops during the evening and not everyone is “responsible” enough to clean up during closing, leaving the storefront unkept. This has caused discomfort to some shop owners.

The City Council said that relocating these hawkers to Carnarvon Street, which is now a one-way street is a safer option for both stall owners and customers. Most hawkers agreed on the relocation, as long as City Council has a solid blueprint, and provide enough water and electricity supply as well as space for clean up.

Hong, owner of the drinks stall at Chulia Street, said if everything goes well, they’re planning to shift after Chinese New Year next year.

Foodies, what do you think of this plan? Do you think hawkers will lose some of its regular patrons or it’s best for both hawkers and customers? Let us know in the comments, have a great day ahead and buh bye!
