Google Honours The Deceased Dr.Wu Lien-teh on His 142nd Birthday:
Born in Penang in 1879, Dr. Wu Lien-teh is believed to be the forerunner of today’s N95 mask. To commemorate his achievement, Google has decided to honour Wu on the his 142nd birthday.
Not only was he the first the medical student of Chinese descent to study at the University of Cambridge. He was also the first Malayan nominated for the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, in 1935. He was best known for his contribution in the Manchurian plague.
The disease had a 99.9% fatality rate and would ultimately claim 60,000 lives. The virus spreads through respiratory transmission. Under Wu’s leadership, he created a mask made of cotton and gauze to filter the air people inhaled. He also helped in establishing quarantine stations, disinfecting buildings and more. Sound familiar? Through his direction, the Manchurian plague was eliminated within months.
Wu passed away at the age of 80 and is known as the “Father of Modern Medicine” in China. Today marks his 142nd birthday and we’re so proud to be a Penangite. Let us all celebrate his day and pay tribute to Wu’s remarkable contributions. That’s all, stay safe and buh bye!
