George Town Festival Is Back With Tons Of Exciting Programs To Enjoy Starting 9th July 2022

The most anticipated Festival in Penang is back and it is as exciting as ever! There are more than 80 programs for you to enjoy and get involved in throughout this 16 days festival. Featuring music, dance, film, photography, and more. Bring your family and friends along for the art & cultural trip like no other at the George Town Festival 2022 (GTF 2022)

Expect Stimulating Activities At George Town Festival Starting 9- 24th July 2022

Based on the concept that art is everywhere and anywhere, the 13th George town Festival (GTF) is said to be a thrilling roller coaster of an event. With more than 80 programs for the public to discover. This is where you will appreciate George Town’s cultural heritage with numerous artistic programs. 

According to Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, “The Festival has positioned the state on the global map, with The New York Times reviewing the Festival as a ‘festival growing into a major Asian art event’ while CNN Travel headlined GTF as ‘Best of Penang rolled up in one big festival’.”

This year’s Festival will feature a fantastic mix of ticketed and free programs. The free-to-attend programs are as followed:

1. G-Short: Finalists Film Screening

Under the themes “Reimagine: A New Way of Seeing” (2021) and “Pause” (2022), the G-Short Short Film Festival presents the first in-person film screening of the G-Short 2021 and G-Short 2022 finalists’ short films in two years! Celebrate the power of storytelling through 90-second short films, created by talented filmmakers from various countries. 

2. Macallum Rooftop Concert

Happening for only one exclusive night, “Macallum Rooftop Concert” offers a concert like no other. Visitors will get the chance to experience the sights and sounds of a local residential area while enjoying an evening of unique cultural beats as well as classic tunes. Residents can even join the excitement from the comforts of their own homes. Just throw open the windows to enjoy the concert!

3. The Great Story of The Infinite Drawing

In a grand mixture of drawings and Augmented Reality (AR), “The Great Story of The Infinite Drawing” reveals the overflowing imagination of a young French illustrator who is stuck in bed following an accident in 2017. Elly Oldman has worked with &Friends and Benjamin Le Baron to create a giant and evolving interactive AR experience.

4. Cahaya XR: First Edition

Tech geeks would definitely get hyped by this program. Featuring new mixed reality, catch the physical and virtual exhibition of “Cahaya XR: First Edition”. The futuristic exhibition fuses local stories with immersive technology such as virtual, augmented, and mixed reality to demonstrate new ways of reimagining Penang’s traditional stories and heritage. Giving you intimate storytelling with a blast of cutting-edge technology.

Affordable Tickets For Everyone

Branding the state as a creative city, festival enthusiasts are invited to join these specially curated programs with affordable tickets that are priced at 30% to 50% lower than elsewhere. Additionally, 70% of the Festival’s programs are free-to-attend.

Look forward to the featured ticketed program such as 1. ‘Ibu 伊母’

A Teochew puppet theatre performance that brilliantly combines traditional Teochew art form with modern technology (projection mapping) to tell a story inspired by a famous Southeast Asian folklore.

2. The Shang Sisters: Pesta Irama Bersama-sama

Inspired by the vibrant spirit of Shanghai jazz, The Shang Sisters – which consists of Janet Lee, Winnie Ho, and Mian Tan, will perform songs from all sorts of cultures in a distinctly Malaysian and Nanyang sound. Expect a foot-tapping vibe accompanied by the award-winning WVC Jazz ensemble.

3. A concert to “浪(lang4) x lepak”

In the effort to celebrate universal sounds, Orang Orang Drum Theatre (OODT) invites audiences to rayau (wander) and lepak (hang out) together in “A concert to “浪(lang4) x lepak”. Through energetic performances of shigu, gamelan, jidor, and many more unique instruments as the troupe is set to explore diverse sounds from different cultures globally.

4. The Senses

“The Senses” is an out-of-this-world concert that is taking place at The Habitat Penang Hill’s Curtis Crest. Offering an all-around sensorial experience in Penang Hill Biosphere Reserve’s 130-million-years-old rainforest. Prepare to be amazed while savouring a unique performance under the stars, overlooking the vibrant city below.

Although the Festival is back in a physical format this year, it returns without big-scale outdoor events. Instead, small and medium events on a reduced scale with diverse themes at different venues will be held throughout the Festival to create the mood for a universal celebration.
