Penang’s Popular Hiking Trail, Cherok To’Kun Will Be Closed To The Public Until Dec 12, 2023

Cherok To’Kun Penang Will Be Closed Until Dec 12, 2023

For hikers on the island, your regular spots will be a trip up to Penang Hill or alternatively, Moongate. While Penang island has got several hiking trails, over on mainland Penang, there is one famous hiking trail known as Cherok To’Kun.

Cherok To’Kun has a dome-shaped peak and is the tallest point on mainland Penang at 547 meters. In addition to this, it also houses the biggest tree in Penang, a Mengkundor (Tetrameles nudiflora) that’s estimated to be a century-old! In fact, the buttressed trunk is twice or thrice the height of an average human being!

Enough fun facts, if you’re a regular hiker at Cherok To’Kun, then do note that the trail will be closed to the public until the 12th of December 2023. As reported by TheStar, the Penang Environment Committee chairman Phee Boon Poh said that slope rectification and stabilization works had already begun.

Heavy machinery to aid the works will arrive on 1st February 2022. So with this decision, hikers will not be allowed to go to the hilltop using other existing trails.

“Slope rectification works will be carried out from the foothill right up to the hilltop and this could pose a danger to hikers if we do not close the trail,” he said in a statement Wednesday (Jan 26).
