9 Famous Penang Hawker Food At RM5 And Below
1. Ali Nasi Lemak
Known to be one of the best Nasi Lemak in Penang, there’s always a snaking queue since the start of their business. And if you come early, you might even spot them preparing each Nasi Lemak as they pour over their special sambal sauce. Choose from various toppings such as fried fish, shrimp, cuttlefish and more. The best part is, it’s all RM1.80 only!

2. Air Itam Bisu Laksa
When it comes to Penang, Assam Laksa definitely tops the chart for the must-try. A bowl of hot broth that’s spicy, sour, and filled with umami, the chewy noodles simply add more to the texture. Generously topped with fresh mackerel fish and vegetables, each bowl is only RM4.50! As exciting as it is, this place is named Bisu Laksa because one of the owners cannot speak or hear, so you’ll need to use hand signs!

3. Mee Sotong Hameed Pata
If you’re willing to queue for good food, then you have to go to Hameed Pata for their Mee Sotong. Specifically the one at Esplanade Food Court. A plateful of red noodles that come with pieces of Sotong or squid, it’s got a charred flavour that adds points to the dish. Priced between RM5 to RM7 per serving, we recommend you to give this a try!

4. CY Choy Road Hokkien Mee
Hokkien Mee or Prawn Noodles is definitely a specialty here in Penang. A bold taste that distinguishes itself from other hawker food, this Hokkien Mee has gained recognition for its pack-full of shrimp flavours. Priced at RM4 for the most authentic choice, you can choose to add more toppings such as fish balls or pork innards.

5. Penang Road Famous Teochew Chendul
First started in 1936, this Cendol spot in Penang has spread its name across the whole Penang and even the country. Retaining its food stall concept until now, they have now expanded their business and have a place just a few steps from the stall. But if you want to experience the old way, fret not to stand next to it and enjoy it. A cheap price at RM2.70 per bowl, it’s the perfect dessert to kick off the heat.

6. Chulia Street Wanton Mee
Chulia Street has many street foods. One of these is the Wantan Mee. Always a crowd, you’ll most probably see a queue when you’re there. A homemade dark sauce that glitters from the oil, the noodles are chewy and top with some fresh homemade wontons. Not to mention, there are Char Siew too. Priced at RM4 for their small portion, totally worth it right?

7. Air Itam Sister Curry Mee
Everyone knows about Air Itam Sister Curry Mee. A cute sister duo that has been operating a Curry Mee stall for over 70 years, it is now mainly handled by their grandniece and grandnephew. While it might not be one of the best, it surely is a place filled with warmth and laughter. Currently priced at RM4 per bowl, it’s cheap, right?

Another Chulia Street food is Apom and it’s easy to spot one. A humble store helmed by an old auntie who sells authentic Apom, you’ll always see a long queue near it. Using simple ingredients such as sugar, coconut, milk and flour, one Apom costs only RM0.50! So if you’re looking for soft yet crispy Apom, then you have to try this out!
