9 Exciting Things To Do This February In Penang 2020

Hello, Penang Lang! We’re just a few days away from February and it’s time to update your calendar on what to do in this new month. It’s always a struggle to find out what is happening around us and to plan out what to do, be it with your family, friends or significant other. 1. Penang Hot Air Balloon Fiesta

This once-a-year fiesta that is held in Padang Polo is a not to miss event if you’re in or visiting Penang. Starting as early as 7AM, there will be two rounds of ticket selling time (7:15AM and 5:45PM) to ride your favourite hot air balloon! Aside from the hot air balloon highlight, there will also be fun activities too! From bouncy trampolines, challenging bull rides to the craft paint, it’s going to be a fulfilling day!

2. Chinese New Year Celebration (槟城庙会)

This one-day event that literally translates into ‘Temple Festival’ is a major event that gathers the crowd, be it locals or tourists. Spread across 10 culturally diverse streets in Georgetown, this is a festival that you can learn about the history of clan houses and the Chinese culture in Penang. From exciting lion dances to street performances, it’s going to be a night packed with fun activities!

3. Sunway Carnival Disney Valentine Pop Up Store

In conjunction with Valentine’s Day, Mickey and Minnie from Disney is having a pop-up store in Sunway Carnival Mall. Swinging in at the right time, it’s the perfect spot to find limited edition Disney Valentine merchandise for your significant other! Featuring from cute mugs to T-shirts and bags, there’s also a Disney Valentine photo booth for you to take pictures!

4. Taiwan Formosa Circus Act

Have you seen those movies where people swing from one side to the other at a circus? Well, now it’s coming to live in Penang! This Taiwanese based act is a blend of classic and modern dance, song, theatre and acrobatics with street performances. Established in 2011, they have been traveling across countries to perform from Japan to France. So don’t miss out on this special chance to meet them!

5. Hin Bus Depot Garage Sales

As the saying goes, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. This is one of the few spots in Penang to feature a garage sale. Selling preloved items from books, toys, household decorations to board games, it’s time to dig up some treasure. Situated at Hin Bus Depot, this is a lively art space that is converted from an old bus depot. And most importantly, it’s a beautiful spot that is worth an Instagram post!

6. Emily of Emerald Hill

Written in 1982, this is Singapore’s most famous play. Reenacting the story of a poor girl who marries into a rich Straits Chinese family and how she becomes a powerful society hostess, this is the kind of performance that will leave its audience feeling mesmerised. Performed by Pearlly Chua who has been with Emily of Emerald Hill for 30 years, she will be performing in both Mandarin and English versions! 7. Chap Goh Meh

Chap Goh Meh or the Fifteenth Day of Chinese New Year, is also Chinese Valentine’s Day. If you were to ask what’s the must-do thing on this day, then it’s got to be the Mandarin Tossing Ceremony. Traditionally, single women will buy mandarin oranges and throw it into the sea in hopes of finding their other half. Nowadays, this ceremony still holds and is held in Esplanade. So if you haven’t tried it out yet, join them on February 8th!

8. Circus On Ice

Yes, this month is filled with exciting show isn’t it? Circus On Ice is not your typical circus show. With the entire performance carried out on ice, this is a new type of show presented by the Great British Circus. In this 2 hours performance, be prepared to laugh, amaze and impressed by the acrobatic moves, figure skating and thrilling stunts! Oh and did we mention that Olaf and Elsa will be joining too?

9. Thaipusam

Celebrated in the full moon of the 10th month in the Hindu calendar, this is a festival that involves physical endurance such as piercings and hooks on the front and back body as a symbolic sacrifice to the god. Bombarded with loud music, you’ll also see the crowd dancing and singing in the streets to support the devotees. It’s definitely an ‘out of this world’ experience to see!
