Penang is a humble island that will never be short of amazing street food. Our best comprises iconic Char Koay Teow, Hokkien Mee, Nasi Kandar and the list goes on. Yet another staple street food well-loved by locals is Chee Cheong Fun, silky smooth steamed rice rolls drizzled with sesame sauce that is served with shrimp paste and chilli sauce. One of the OG Chee Cheong Fun stall in Penang is Yan Foo at Lebuh Kimberley.

Operated by a friendly husband-wife-duo, this is one of those rare places where you can enjoy a simple, no fuss plate of Chee Cheong Fun while you chat away with the owner of the stall. At the same time, you can also see clippings of celebrities like Martin Yan and Aimee Chan from Hong Kong hanging right in front of the stall. What we love most about this place is that the friendly Uncle will personally recommend different ways to enjoy this dish.

According to the Uncle, firstly, we should try the Chee Cheong Fun on its own without any sauces. Next, try dipping the Chee Cheong Fun with shrimp paste and chilli sauce before mixing the sweet sauce with chilli sauce. And finally, mix all the 3 sauces together for a flavourful bite. 4 different flavours from one plate of Chee Cheong Fun. Oh, did we mention that each plate is reasonably priced at only RM2.50?
