1. Chatto – Handcrafted Tea Bar
It’s true to say that Chatto has reinvented tea for the Instagram generation. Really, though, their ombre-coloured milk tea the real eye-catcher. Operating since 2017, it’s shocking to say that they now have 21 branches across Malaysia. Upon stepping in, expect everything to be clean and minimal. And yes, provenance is the thing here- their ingredients are of Japan’s and Taiwan’s finest- purists, rejoice.

2. Kozor Cafe & Salon
Coffee seems to be an ever-changing industry. Peoples’ interest in coffee doesn’t seem to tire, coffee lovers just invent new and more interesting experiences to complement a cup of the black stuff. KOZOR is more than just a hair salon; it’s a combination of cafe and hair salon. The cafe-like atmosphere provides you with the best space where you can talk and relax with a cup of joe.

3. Hanjan Eatery. Soju Bar
A Soju Bar in Penang? Yes, you’ve heard it right. Hanjan Eatery is a new soju bar opened by a Korean from Seoul. Upon stepping in, you’ll find a sleek looking bar that seats seven. Every corner of this bar is goldish fancy, where the atmosphere is enhanced by the intimate, low-light ambience. Their cocktail menu is pretty extensive and the food menu is clutch with its Korean dishes.

4. Blooms
Back in the olden days where pink was merely just another teeny fish in the colour wheel’s vast pond- how antiquated this now seems. And here’s another cafe which is proving the old fact wrong- and yes, it’s probably the sweetest looking cafe in all of Penang. Patterned plates, sleek couches, and dramatic lighting would be enough to amp up anyone’s Instagram feed. Add appealing dishes and pinkish ball ponds, and you’re guaranteed to rack up the double taps. Their interior is all in shades of “millennial pink”, surely causing a social media meltdown.

There’s a lot of coffee in Penang, but don’t settle for anything but the best. Here’s a new place to get the most from your caffeine high. 6. Cupid Dupid
Here’s a new pastry spot peddling the kinds of confections people dream about and is vowed to satisfy every size of sweet tooth- Cupid Dupid. We love how unpretentious everything is here- folks throw on their nice pair of jeans, or pairs of good earrings to indulge in their pastries. It’s also the perfect spot for breakfast as you can pick up freshly baked baguettes and flaky buttery croissants.

7. M Mamak
It would be weird for Penangites not being in love with our local Mamak stalls. This new Mamak place we’re about to share ain’t your typical Mamak stall. Set in a goldish interior with Turkish wooden furniture, everything’s fancy at M Mamak. However, don’t let their expensive-looking interior fool you, they serve their dishes at a super affordable price! Lunch tends to be lively, evenings are more sophisticated.

8. Ludwig Softserve
If putting a smile on people’s faces was an Olympic sport, Ludwig Softserve would definitely go home with a gold. They have reinvented soft-serve ice cream for the Instagram generation. Really, though, it’s just a backdrop for toppings- the photogenic likes of beautifully coloured softserve with chocolate sprinkles and oreo gravel arranged in petri dishes on the counter ready for sprinkling. And yes, provenance is the thing here- their ingredients are of New Zealand’s and Australia’s finest- purists, rejoice.

9. The Alley @ Nagore Square & Icon City
The bubble tea culture has existed in the world for several years, but only a handful have survived the trend. And here’s one which made its mark worldwide. At The Alley, Quality is the real deal. Expect everything to be crafted with sincerity: their soft and chewy tapioca pearls made from scratch and tea leaves to be processed more than 500 days, they ensured that each of their beverages to have their own distinct aroma, flavour & character. Definitely a great sweet tooth cure.
