Penang, known as the Pearl of the Orient, is also an industrial hub, and home to many factories. Remember how we grew up having at least one Sony product in our household? Gone are the days as the brand is set to close its manufacturing factory in Penang in September 2021.
Sony is Closing its Factory in Penang in September 2021:
After 36 years in operation, the manufacturing plant in Penang which has been making audio products and parts for domestic and international markets, is set to close next September.
State International and Domestic Trade Committee chairman Halim Hussain said with the closure of Sony’s plant in Perai, about 3,400 workers will be laid off. Of the numbers, 1,800 are locals, while the other 1,600 are foreigners.
While Sony has yet to release a statement, it is believed that the decision is part of Sony’s plan to restructure its operations globally.
Halim said the state is drawing RM10 billion in foreign direct investments (FDI) this year, so more than 9,000 jobs will be generated in the near future. He added that the state government will not leave these retrenched workers aside. With the more than 9,000 jobs available in the market soon, they’ll be able to find work.
Foodies, what are your thoughts on this? Let’s hope for the best to these retrenched workers. That being said, don’t forget to continue practice safe hygiene and adhere to the SOP, buh bye!
