We all know that China is slowly recovering from the coronavirus pandemic. Patients are cured and lockdowns ended. However, the whole world face-palmed when China started to eat ‘exotic’ meats again. Guess bad habits really do die hard. But not for long! As one of China’s metropolitan cities, Shenzhen, decided to ban dogs, cats and wildlife meat for good. Good riddance!
Learning From Past Mistakes
According to reports on BBC News, Shenzhen city is the first in China to ban sales or consumption of wildlife meat due to the coronavirus pandemic. As everyone was informed, the illness outbreak is very much connected to wildlife meat. Thus it is prime time that they get the urge to ban it. They even take a step further with the ban and include dogs and cats on the list.
This long-overdue ban will be effective starting the 1st of May. Said by Humane Society International, 30 million dogs are killed every day for meat across Asia. so the society praised this move. “This really could be a watershed moment in efforts to end this brutal trade that kills an estimated 10 million dogs and 4 million cats in China every year,” said Dr. Peter Li, the group’s China policy specialist.
Dogs And Cats Are Companions, Not Food
However, it’s not very common to eat dogs in China. The Shenzhen government said that since dogs and cats have developed closer relationships with humans, this type of ban is a common practice in developed countries. “This ban also responds to the demand and spirit of human civilization,” it added. This is really a great move from their side. We highly support this move and are hopeful that the rest of China would follow through this path as well.
