Besides these remarkable features, this cinema was a work of art by Charles Boutcher, an architect behind numerous renowned buildings in Malaysia such as the Zahir Mosque in Alor Setar and the Kedah House on Northam Road.
Needless to say, Rex Cinema was an icon. It operated until the 2000s before a furniture shop, MEKIO took over its operations.

According to Free Malaysia Today (FMT), the developer has “endeavoured to maintain the facade of the cinema.” On the other hand, local activists are upset over this decision and an online petition was even set up here. As of the time of writing, the petition has over 2,700 signatures.
