By now, most of us must have heard about the upcoming Penang Light Rail Transit (LRT). The latest update to this highly anticipated project is that the first phase will now stretch from Penang International Airport all the way to Tanjung Bungah.
Penang LRT Project Extended From Airport To Tanjung Bungah
The initial route would connect PIA to Komtar but with this additional 6km extension, the project will now cover a total of 29km with 27 stations. According to Transport Minister Anthony Loke, “Komtar will be a main station in the city located next to Sia Boey Urban Archeological Park.” This line will be elevated and built on road reserves to minimize land acquisition.

Loke also added that the project is expected to start this year; given that all discussions go smoothly and the green light is given by the Finance Ministry. The RM 4.5 billion project is targeted to be completed in five years.
