Penang Hill is no doubt Penang’s most prominent tourist attraction. As soon as people step into the Pearl Island, the first thing that they would do is visit Penang Hill. Taking this into account, The Penang Hill Corporation (PHC) launched the Penang Hill Upper Station Upgrading Project (Phase Four) to improve comfort and space for more visitors in the future.

The project would comprise of expanding the waiting halls and facilities at the Penang Hill Upper Station. Said by PHC General Manager, Datuk Cheok Lay Leng, the current upper station can hold up to 250 visitors at a time. “The Phase Four upgrading project would increase the space to 1,422sqm (two floors), allowing it to accommodate up to 700 visitors at a time”.
According to Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, the project would also put the hill in a better position for future visitor’s experience. He added that the PHC would work towards achieving the Green Building Index (GBI) Gold rating for this project.
A Century’s Worth Of Service
Did you know that the upper station was built and open in 1923? In other words, the station has been serving us for almost 100 years! “We look forward to celebrating the 100th anniversary of the upper station when the Phase Four Project is completed.” Chow continued.
Safety Is The Number One Priority
“The developments on Penang Hill are in line with the fundamental guidelines stipulated in the Penang Hill Special Area Plan (SAP) 2016 and Penang Hill Special Area Plan (Substitution) 2020 to maintain the aesthetic value and natural attractions of the hill,” The hill is a sensitive area that must be protected. Not to mention that the slopes have to be monitored and maintained from time to time to ensure public safety.
