Hi there foodies, shall we take a quick detour from food-related news? Instead, let’s focus on the latest update in Penang. As we all know, we are now living in a digital world. Information is available online and is accessible with just a few swipes. This then results in the use of high-speed internet being considered a necessity. With that said, Penang is now the first state in Malaysia to obligate the installation of fibre optic infrastructure as a basic utility.
Developers Required To Install Fibre Optic For All Projects In Penang
Well, what does this mean? First of all, here in Malaysia, all development projects would include basic utilities such as electricity and water supply. But just yesterday, it was reported that Penang has made it compulsory for all future developments to include fibre optic infrastructure too.
Simply put, all developers are now required to install fibre optic telecommunications infrastructure in new buildings and development projects in Penang.
“The decision made by the state on Dec 17 is to support the use of high-speed broadband via fibre optic cables, given that the use of copper cables for internet connections have become no longer relevant,” said Zairil Khir Johari, The Infrastructure and Transport Committee chairman.
“In ensuring all new development projects are equipped with fibre optic cables, it will enable us to proceed to the next step, which is to provide gigabit internet and hasten the process towards the faster 5G platform.”
This Would Also Help Spur Penang’s Digital Economy
Additionally, this decision is made as it is in line with achieving the 2030 Penang goal. It aims to provide comprehensive and high-quality digital infrastructure to its citizens. So, what do you think of this? Yay to high-speed internet?
