Penang Council Will Be Launching Environmental-Friendly, Rice Straws As A Go-Green Initiative

Say Bye To Single-Use Plastics!

Penang has always been known as the humble island that reigns plenty of recognition across the years. We are known for being the tiny island that’s packed with good food. Alongside good food, we also have several titles when it comes to go-green initiatives. Throughout the years, Penang has introduced the ‘No-Plastic’ initiative and soon, there will be environmental-friendly straws too! Keep scrolling guys!

Penang Set To Introduce Go-Green, Rice Straws

Alright, so this new environmental-friendly straw is made from starch and rice and will be officially launched during the Penang International Green Conference & Exhibition (PIGCE) 2019. This annual event will take place in Gurney Paragon from September 27th to September 29th 2019.

Penang’s Welfare, Caring Society and Environment Committee chairman Phee Boon Poh says that this initiative leans towards “reducing the plastic usage whilst promoting the going-green mindset.”  In addition, these straws are “the researched and developed products of Penang-Malaysia.”

If you’d like to be the first few to witness this historical launching of our humble island, then be sure to take part in the Conference that starts tomorrow!

Wait guys, here’s more information about these environmental-straws. The straws are not reusable and but they are edible as they can also be made into animal feed as well as fertiliser for crops. To make them into animal feed and fertiliser, simply dissolve the straws in a bowl of water for about an hour and it’s ready to go.

Finally, some good news to those who are looking to purchase these straws; they will be available in the market once they’re officially launched during the upcoming conference.
