Everyone is familiar with Penang Botanical Garden and some of us visit it weekly if not daily. Quick question, do any of you know how old Penang Botanical Garden is? Hint: It’s at least a century years old. Did any of you guess 135-year-old? If you did, then you’re correct!
The 135-Year-Old Botanical Garden Is Getting An Upgrade
Recently, it’s been reported that Penang Botanical Garden will be getting an upgrade. The plan is to get Penang Botanical Garden to be listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Besides that, there are 25 projects that will be part of this upgrade. This project is part of the Special Area Plan just like the 111-year-old fire station that is located at Beach Street.
Seven main projects that are part of the 25 projects will be the beginning stage for this upgrade. The seven main projects include the Central Visitor Centre, Park Conservation and Research Centre, Malaysiana Boulevard, repair of the existing Garden Mall, Natural Amphitheater, nursery facilities, irrigation systems, and the observation deck. Additionally, works for the Central Visitor Centre will begin soon according to State Local Government Committee chairman Jagdeep Singh Deo.
Moreover, the Central Visitor Centre will provide various amenities that includes parking lots. Also, there will be a herbarium and a place for plant research that will be located at the Park Conservation and Research Centre. Additionally, visitors can expect to see plants with names related to landmarks in the country at the Malaysiana Boulevard and a reflective pool within an open space in the Natural Amphitheater.
