It’s not every day that we get to come across edible arts. Baking can be another form of art and as foodies, we appreciate every hard work given by bakers to their products. This time, we found a local home-based baker that makes elegant and intricate baked goods.
JOJIE & JESS Home Based Baker
Roughly a year ago, Nurshafiqah Abd Razak or Sha, 27, decided to turn her newfound passion into a business. JOJIE & JESS is a home-based business that sells exclusive and instagrammable treats such as macaroons, pretzels, and sugar cookies. The once corporate employee turned into a full-time baker after receiving basic baking tools from her best friend.
“Actually, I was not into baking that much.” She said in an interview with Penang Foodie. However, after a few times of scrolling social media, she fell in love with colorful macarons & pretzels. Later, Sha made up her mind and went for a macaron workshop in Ipoh. She then realized that making something cute and delicious is her passion.
The Sole Baker
Sha admitted that it is tiring to do all of the baking on her own. However, she can produce 50-100 pieces of simple cookies in a day! That includes decorating and packaging. “I used to bake and decorate 200 cookies in 2 days for Plexus Company and it was crazy!” Meanwhile, Sha also stressed that time management is very crucial. She has to keep track of how many items she needs to produce in a day to make sure that all of her orders are met. “Because I still need to sleep for at least 6 hours a day.” She said.
Productivity Depends Heavily On The Designs
Cartoon characters such as Elsa, Ariel, and One Piece took her the longest to make. “I remember the time when I made 25 pieces of them. I started at 10 AM and finished around 8 PM.” However, Sha also reaffirmed that it was worth the trouble. “I’ll be even happier if the cookies turned out to be delicious.”
Best Selling Products
When we scrolled down JOJIE & JESS page, we can’t help but be charmed by her Sugar Cookies DIY kits. “The idea came when I saw one of the bakers on Instagram did it.”
During the MCO, a lot of bakers from different states produced kits as such but there was none in Penang. “So I became the only baker in Penang that produces DIY kits,” She said. Furthermore, the DIY handpainted cookie kits are especially popular with kids and it helped her tremendously in MCO.
There are two types of DIY Cookies kits; DIY Icing Cookies and DIY Cookies Painting. Each costs RM25 and comes with its own special ingredients. At the same time, Sha also offers fancy macarons and pretzels with a price range of RM2.50 to RM8.00 each.
Setting A Workshop For Penangites In September
At the end of the interview, this talented baker claimed that she will come up with a new product soon. She will also do a workshop collaboration with Movinlight Studio in September. Sha excitedly claimed that she can’t wait to share her knowledge with fellow Penangites. Hopefully, things went well for her in the future. Passion always matters.
