We all know that the Mid-Autumn Festival falls on the 15th day of the 8th Chinese calendar month. But, did you know it is said that the moon is brightest and roundest on this day and families would gather round to admire the moon’s beauty? Since then, Mid-Autumn Festival is closely connected to a family reunion. Of course, there is also the legend of the Chang’e.

This year, having a reunion comes as no easy feat due to the battle with the pandemic. Thus, we should all practise the culture of mooncake gifting to our loved ones. After all, if we can’t physically be with our family, then the thought is what matters right?

Ng Kee is probably one of the last few biscuit shops in Penang that still offers handmade mooncakes. Not only that but till this day, Loh Mun Loong, the third generation currently handling Ng Kee still uses his father’s passed-down recipe to perfect the mooncakes.
Every single step right from the preparation of fillings and yolk, to the making of the crust and all the way to baking, Ng Kee does them by hand. Among the signature mooncake flavours at Ng Kee are the Coconut, Lotus, Tau Sar and Red Bean.

“The mooncakes are made with the help of my wife and daughter and it gives me a great sense of joy to be able to pass the same sense of unity to other families”, said Loh.
This year, Ng Kee is offering their mooncakes and various biscuits nationwide as well as to Singapore. So if you’re looking for that perfect mooncake to gift your family who is afar this year, look no further than Ng Kee.
