Penang Island City Council (MBPP) mayor Datuk Yew Tung Seang said a proposal to reduce the speed limit in some parts of the heritage area from 50kph to 40kph, making it safer for pedestrians and cyclists, is in place and will be carried out soon. Yew added that the new enforcement will be in line with efforts to making Penang a “greener and safer” city.
Pedestrian And Cyclist-Friendly
While there are still a few more procedures to go through before the new speed limit is enforced, driving through Penang’s George Town World Heritage Site sure will feel different once the proposal is in place! “It will make the area more cycling-friendly and encourage motorists to respect those who need to walk or cycle around,” Yew said at the MBPP ordinary council meeting conducted via teleconferencing.
