Ouch! This is practically the same situation we had before with crispy rendang! Being in Southeast Asia, we know that dumplings can come in various forms. Be it boiled, steamed, pan-fried, or even deep-fried, the fillings will always remain juicy and succulent. So when the judges of MasterChef Australia criticized this traditional dish for not having crunchy fillings, you can hear the whole region facepalming in unison.
The Challenge; A Dish With Crunchy Texture
Upon being briefed, Pang, a cook from Perth with Mauritian-Chinese heritage, decided to present the judges with crispy prawn wontons paired with garlic and chili sauce. Unimpressed, the judge told him that the dish did not meet the criteria. Allan, said, “Mine is not crunchy,” despite the audible crunch it made. He continued to make his point by pinching the wonton filling and said, “That’s soft,”.
Crunchy In The Correct Places
Winner of MasterChef Australia Season Two, Chef Adam Liaw, took it to Twitter to set things straight. “The meat-containing portion of a wonton does not need to be crunchy! This is like the crispy rendang all over again,” he wrote. “I would even go so far as to say that if the ‘ball’ portion of the wonton is crunchy, it is a badly-made wonton.”

Some questioned Pang for choosing the wrong dish that was not an all-rounded “extra crunchy” food suitable for the challenge. However, Liaw remained firm saying that the food should only be “crunchy in the correct places.” The judges should look at it like how thew want to have their fried chicken. Crispy on the outside while remaining moist and succulent on the inside.
Thankfully Pang Remains In The Game
Without losing hope yet, Pang bounced back from the criticism and redeemed himself in the second half round with impressive cheesy Korean fire pockets. We are rooting for you Pang! Do you think your mom would approve this? Share with us in the comment section below!
