For the past few months, it has been a very difficult time for the tourism industry in Malaysia. After all, the international borders were closed and strict rules and regulations were imposed. With that said, many hotels and tourist attractions nationwide were not able to welcome guests. Unfortunately, many hotels in Penang were not able to sustain during this period, including Holiday Inn Resort at Batu Ferringhi.
Ceasing Operations After Four Decades
After four decades of operations, Holiday Inn Resort will be permanently closed by 30th June 2020. This was announced by Hong Kong-based Harilela Group via Asia Garden Sdn Bhd, reported by New Straits Times. Holiday Inn Resort is strategically located in Batu Ferringhi. The four-star hotel is in a similar location as other prominent hotels and resorts in Penang, including the famous chain, Hard Rock Hotel.
Unsurprisingly, this business was affected by the global pandemic Covid-19. Despite finding multiple ways to stay afloat, the management had to make this decision after much consideration. In the New Straits Times report, it was added that the management ended the message without mentioning severance entitlements or benefits for its employees. Despite this closure, The Harilela Group appears to have a new property in Hong Kong.
Another One Bites The Dust
Holiday Inn Resort will be joining others that have announced closures including Jazz Hotel and Penaga Hotel. As tourism plays a huge role in Penang’s economy, it is sad to see all these good hotels go. Hopefully, the tourism industry will be picking up slowly. If you want to support, remember that there are many hotels offering good deals this month!
