#1 Mu Tong Hokkien Mee @ The Shark Food Court

Previously located at Sin Hwa Coffee Shop before settling down at The Shark Food Court, they’re best known by old-timers as Mu Tong Hokkien Mee. Having over 60 years of culinary history, their broth is dubbed by many as “liquid gold.” A thick, aromatic concoction that leaves a spicy-savoury satisfaction. With fairly generous servings, they’re no doubt one of the best Hokkien Mee in Penang.

#2 T&T Prawn Mee Shop

Ever seen Hokkien Mee served in a claypot? T&T Prawn Mee Shop serves an array of comfort food, mostly in a claypot. Their signature claypot Hokkien Mee is a hit here. Thick, rich and savoury broth paired with nicely done noodles along with other ingredients that you can add. Not the biggest fan of claypot? You can have it in a regular bowl as well.

#3 Ah Koo’s Hokkien Mee

Ah Koo’s is very well-known among the locals for serving some of the best Hokkien Mee in Penang. One of the few shops that operate only during the morning, waiting time is at least 30 minutes during peak hours. Tucked in Classic Cafe, their hokkien mee broth is one of the thickest, will full-bodied shrimp aroma that may be too sweet for one’s liking, depending on your preference. They’re always sold out by 11 a.m. so be sure to visit them early.

Not to be mistaken by Ah Koo’s, Ah Kooi Hokkien Mee in our humble opinion, is underrated. Nestled along Jalan Tavoy, the uncle serves a hearty bowl of goodness! Light broth that’s rich with prawn flavors, the aroma of the stock lingers on your taste buds. A good bowl of hokkien mee is determined by the broth, and Ah Kooi really nailed it.

#5 Kedai Kopi Bobo Hokkien Mee

Tucked under a flat at Taman Lip Sin, Kedai Kopi Bobo is no stranger to many locals, especially those around the neighbourhood. Getting a bowl of their Hokkien Mee usually takes at least 20 minutes during peak hours. The broth is aromatic, spicy, savoury with a balanced sweetness. Do try out their Instagrammable coffee in a steel cup. Definitely one of the better Hokkien Mee in Penang, drop by if you happen to be around that area.

#6 Wu Foo Hokkien Prawn Soup Noodle

A hidden gem in Penang, Wu Foo is located on the same street as the famous 888 Hokkien Mee but on different ends. Using charcoal to fire up the broth and cook the noodles, one can already tell how old-school this place is. The savoury-sweet flavor is packed in the broth, and you’ll get ample ingredients to add on, including offals and intestines.

Be prepared to queue for at least 30 minutes and you’ll be awarded a hot bowl of savoury goodness. A flavorful broth that has just the right amount of sweetness, we heard the owner of Super and Ah Koo are siblings, hence explains why these two stalls are equally loved by locals.

Another old school spot for a good bowl of hokkien mee, CY Choy Road is best known by locals as “bridge street hokkien mee.” Broth by be on the thinner side and less spicy as compared to other places, but still packs a punch. Not to mention the environment is fairly clean, it’s a great comfort food especially during rainy days.

Used to be one of the best Hokkien Mee in Penang back in the old days, to be frank, the standard of 888 Hokkien Mee has dropped since. Still, this stall makes up a decent bowl of warm soup noodle,s especially during rainy days. You can still find a shrimpy aroma in their soup and options to add additional ingredients like Shio Bak (roasted pork), braised egg and more. Do note that they have implemented self-service system, you’ll have to pick up your own bowl of noodle to your table.
