Penang is not short of amazing things be it food or landmarks. If you’re a foodie, then our humble island will always leave your tummy fulfilled. If you’re an explorer, then Penang is a place full of wonders. One of the most magnificent landmarks is this floating temple near the clan jetties, known as Hean Boo Thean Kuan Yin Temple.
Hean Boo Thean Temple: Penang’s Floating Temple
Although most would drop by to pay a visit to the iconic Kuan Yim Temple or Kek Lok Si when in Penang, if you’d like a crowd-less visit, then we suggest visiting Hean Boo Thean.

Dedicated to Kuan Yin – the Goddess of Mercy, this temple is perched above the waters at Weld Quay, hence deemed the ‘floating temple’. Hean Boo Thean was first built back in 1972 on stilts but was later on strengthened and expanded in 2012 to last against the tides, at a cost of RM1.5 million.

Now, the temple consists of 2 storeys, the Upper and Lower Decks measuring a total of up to 12,000 sqft. Hean Boo Thean Temple is located immediately after Yeoh Jetty and can be viewed from Chew Jetty, Tan Jetty, Tan Jetty Reclaimed Land, and Yeoh Jetty.

A work of art on its own, this temple is even more breathtaking when it lights up in the evening. From afar, you can see this beautiful illumination from the lighted lanterns and LED lights and couple it with its floating feature, it gives us major Shanghai vibes.
