Fellow Malaysians, we have great news! Did you know that the speedboat ride from George Town to Butterworth is free for all Malaysians until 31st December 2022? If you’re a little skeptical about it, we’ve tried taking it for a 1-day tour to Butterworth so check out our step-by-step guide here.
A Guide On Taking The George Town-Butterworth Speedboat Service
The first thing to take note of is that if you are traveling from George Town, the speedboat takes you to Penang Sentral, Butterworth. For the speedboat schedule, you can always refer to the one posted on the official website here.
To get to the speedboat, do head on over to the Swettenham Pier. Once you arrive, follow the sign that says ‘Ferry to Butterworth’.
If you’re early and the speedboat has yet to arrive, you can always take a seat in the spacious waiting area.
The friendly staff on duty will announce the boat’s arrival so be sure to be on the lookout. When the boat is here, time to hop on and pick your seat. Once you’re on board, you will find plenty of comfortable cushioned seats in an air-conditioned space.
There are also more seats on the lower deck. Based on our experience, the speedboat is punctual and it takes only approximately 15 minutes to dock at the Penang Sentral, Butterworth pier. So while you’re aboard, take some time to appreciate the stunning sea view from the window.
For the return trip, you will need to flash your IC to get a receipt and follow the sign to get aboard the Butterworth-George Town speedboat. Overall, the entire experience was a breeze and smooth-sailing (get it?)
