To be recognized by Thai SELECT, these restaurants must adhere to strict guidelines. There are four categories of certification for Thai restaurants, which are Signature, Classic, Casual and Unique. Here are the differences:

Restaurants awarded in this category have been endorsed as places that serve authentic Thai food with a taste of premium quality, refined decoration and excellent service.
- Classic
This category is granted to Thai Restaurants of excellent quality
- Casual
This is for restaurants overseas that serve good quality Thai food, but have limited services
- Unique
Thai SELECT Unique is mainly awarded to selected restaurants within Thailand that offer local uniqueness such as Southern Thai food, Northern Thai food, etc.
Also, there is a certification of Thai SELECT Products, which is to certify Thai food products that are made in the traditional way.

Wondering if there is a Thai SELECT certified restaurant here in Penang? Get excited because there is! There are only two restaurants in Penang that are Thai SELECT Classic restaurants, which are Chilli Head Thai Restaurant & Bar and Whatsaeb boat Noodles.
With the seal of approval from the Ministry of Commerce, the Royal Thai Government, Chilli Head has set itself apart from the other Thai restaurants. It is perfect for anyone who appreciates the delicacies and hospitality of Thailand.

Here’s what you should order there. For appetisers, we recommend the Pork Platter, which is ideal for sharing. The platter comes with some pork skewers, pork balls, herb sausage and grilled pork neck which can help to fill you up a little before the main dishes arrive.
Moreover, you can order a plate of Miang Kham (Thai Leaves Roll) to share with your friends and family. It consists of wild betel leaves served with chopped shallots, ginger, lime, chilli, dried shrimps, groundnuts, roasted coconut, and a special homemade sauce. Just wrap the ingredients in the leaf and put it in your mouth for a wonderful combination of sweet, sour, salty and spicy.
Now for the main highlights! Their Tom Yum soup is a must-try with its aromatic spicy lemongrass flavour. Don’t forget to pair it with its best friend, a bowl of fragrant white rice.
Furthermore, you can also opt for their Green Curry, which is creamy goodness of green chilli paste, coconut milk, kaffir lime leaves and pea eggplants.
If you are still looking for a little more spice, do try their Kaeng Som seabass! Enjoy the taste of fresh fish drenched in spicy tamarind soup. It is also well-recommended to pair this piquant dish with a plate of Cha-om Omelette, which is made of Thai Acacia Leaves.
