1. Jawa Mee @ Genting Restaurant
First up, we have Jawa Mee located inside Genting Restaurant. Locals will know that this stall serves the cheapest Jawa Mee in Penang at only RM2.50, available in both soup and fried versions. With its affordable price, you might think the quality or portion is compromised. On the contrary, Uncle still provides a generous portion of noodles plus slices of BBQ pork too. If you’re nearby, this is one stall you need to check out.

2. Tricycle Nasi Lemak Sin Ming Huat Coffee Shop 新明发茶室
Next up, head on over for a Nasi Lemak feast at Paya Terubong’s famous spot, Nasi Lemak Tricycle at Sin Ming Huat Coffee Shop. As you can tell, they are named after serving Nasi Lemak mounted on a trishaw. Here, you’ll get to pick your own dishes like fried chicken, Asam prawns, curry chicken, and many more so feel free to take as much as you can finish. They open as early as 4 AM and usually sell out before 10 AM so be there early or you’ll miss out. Oh and here’s a fun fact, Nasi Lemak Tricycle has been around for over 3 decades.

3. Char Koay Teow @ Restaurant 1288
No trip to Penang will ever be complete without savouring a plate of Char Koay Teow. So is a trip to Paya Terubong whereby you can enjoy a delicious plate of Char Koay Teow at Restaurant 1288. What we love most about this stall is that each plate of Char Koay Teow is still fried upon order and has that mandatory wok-hei to it. Remember to request to add some chili as it gives the CKT a whole other flavour profile.

4. Laksa Opposite Shell Petrol Station (Paya Terubong)
One of the hidden gems in Paya Terubong is none other than this Laksa stall under a wooden shelter that’s opposite of Shell petrol station. This is the kind of place that if you know, then you’ll know. Here, you can get a bowl of heart-warming Laksa and pair it with their Ais Kacang or Cendol. You’ll also find that many locals drop by for a quick refreshing takeaway on a scorching hot day.

5. Mou Tak Deng Curry Mee @ Nan Shan Coffee Shop
Any Curry Mee fans here? If you’ve just raised your hand, then head on over to Mou Tak Deng Curry Mee located inside of Nan Shan Coffee Shop. Here, you can savour a bowl of fragrant White Curry Mee consisting of coconut milk and tender noodles. Feel free to add on extra ingredients like cockles at an extra fee. Oh, and be sure to mix in the chilli paste before enjoying it too!

6. Hokkien mee Opposite Desa Permata Sapphire (蓝宝石花园)
Next, is this hidden Hokkien Mee stall that is located opposite Desa Permata Sapphire Apartment. What’s unique here is that it is quietly tucked right in front of a village house thus offering a more laid-back ambiance. Enjoy a bowl of piping hot Hokkien Mee and a cup of coffee together with some hard-boiled eggs and you’ve got yourself a great start to a morning.

7. Vijaya Curry House
If you’re craving Indian food, the place to go for a delicious feast is none other than Vijaya Curry House. Here, you can expect to find an array of homecooked dishes that are beautifully displayed on the serving shelf. Our favourite here is the Nasi Biryani plus crispy fried chicken that pairs perfectly with the fragrant Biryani Rice cooked with spices.

When someone asks, what’s the best food in Air Itam, do tell them that they must try Million Loh Mee. A bowl of Loh Mee is characterized by its dark and thick gravy that’s rich in meat flavour. In it, there are noodles and optional chicken feet. This particular Loh Mee stall has been around for some time and thus residents of Air Itam are no stranger to this street food gem.
