In Penang, there are a few old-generation eateries that have been around since the early days. Siam Road Char Koay Teow, Sister Curry Mee, Air Itam Laksa and many more. The most recent news regarding one of Penang’s famed street food, Air Itam Laksa, is that it’s ceasing its operations until further notice.
66-Year-Old Penang Air Itam Laksa Is Taking A Break
When in Air Itam, one must not miss out on this renowned Laksa spot. Tucked close to the market, we can easily spot this place with its huge red sign that reads: Pasar Air Itam Laksa. Then, to make sure you’re at the right place, try pinpointing the owner wearing a white chef hat.
A bowl of piping hot Laksa comes with the quintessential elements; tender rice noodles gloriously bathed in aromatic broth packed with shredded mackerel fish. Air Itam Laksa has long been a favourite among many locals and tourists since it was established back in 1955. It’s a 66-year-old gem that’s close to the hearts of many.
Unfortunately, just yesterday, a notice was posted on its official Facebook page that today, the 18th of May 2021 will be its final day serving Penang’s authentic Asam Laksa.
Goodbye, For Now
Following the above notice, there is one more that attributes the business closure to MCO 3.0. Indeed, with the battle of pandemic, businesses all over are struggling to stay afloat. This hiatus might be temporary and we sure hope we’re not losing yet another respectable Penang legacy.
