When one is in Penang, we will often end up on a food tour. Penang may be a tiny island but it is a tiny island packed with scrumptious food everywhere. Among the best street food in Penang, we have Char Koay Teow, Laksa, Curry Mee, Nasi Kandar and so much more. Then, we have some unique street eats that have been modified such as Crab Meat Char Koay Teow, Fried Jawa Mee, and another one we’ve discovered: Deep-Fried Char Hor Fun at Ah Huat Pek, Balik Pulau.
Ah Huat Pek Balik Pulau: Unique Deep-Fried Char Hor Fun In Penang
For those residing in Balik Pulau, you may be a regular patron here. Located at Jalan Baharu, Ah Huat Pek is known for serving stir-fried noodle dishes like Char Koay Teow, Ee Fu Mee, Hokkien Char, Char Hor Fun as well as a dish that has yet to be found elsewhere: Deep Fried Hor Fun.

A plate of Char Hor Fun consists of wide Chinese noodles that’s made from rice. Then it is coated with a thick, usually savoury egg gravy. Then, we have the Deep Fried Hor Fun version that, to us, is rather unique.
Now, let’s take a closer look at what’s on a plate of Deep Fried Hor Fun. As the name suggests, instead of regular thick noodles, this version comes with the noodles being deep-fried, closely resembling crispy air pockets. Of course, the egg gravy is drenched over the deep-fried Hor Fan noodles too.

Upon your first bite, you will feel like you are chewing on something crunchy like a piece of snack. Then, the next texture that greets you is one that is tender and you’ll recall that this is, after all, Hor Fun noodles. Surprisingly, this combo works really well with one another.
