Without a doubt, Penangites love it whenever there’s a piece of news about the achievements and success of other Penangites. We just love to see other people striving in this world, plus it brings us a lot of joy. And the most recent case being a 20 y/o artist from Penang! Coming from a humble background, Chan Kai Lun has been painting since he was young. After years of blood, sweat and tears, at the tender age of 20, he painted his first-ever mural! Pure skills man.
The Masterpiece!
The said masterpiece which was sponsored by Nippon Paint Malaysia lies along the street of Lorong Ikan. Passing by, you can’t help but notice the gigantic art piece that portrays 2 vendors with dried salted fish and spices spread out in front of them.
The piece was so huge that it took him 3 weeks to complete and he named it ‘Street Memories’. It was named as so because many people have forgotten the former days of this street where it was a distributing centre of dried salted fish. With this piece, the artist hopes to bring back the past days of the street and bring exposure to both the locals and tourists about the history of the street. When you search up the location of Lorong Ikan on Instagram, you can already see quite a handful of photos taken of the said piece. That’s quite amazing ain’t it.
Here’s what we know about the talented and creative artist!
Since he was as young as 4 y/o, he has been interested in drawing cartoon characters. Later then, his mother sent him to art classes in order for him to further explore his passion. Growing up, he has participated in numerous drawing competition and to his credit, he managed to achieve quite a number of prizes under his name.
In the year of 2017 and 2018, he has managed to run 2 solo exhibitions. These prizes have increased his confidence over time and he has since made up his mind about pursuing art for his future career. Way to go, the world needs more artists anyway!

You would definitely want to marvel at his majestic and cultural art piece. If you love the piece, maybe you can drop him an encouraging message. Well, a little encouragement goes a long way right!
