111-Year-Old Fire Station In Beach Street Rebrands As Tourism Hotspot

Do any of you know the oldest fire station in Penang? Hint: It’s located on Beach Street. Now, do you know how old the fire station is? I’ll give you a hint: It’s past the century mark. If your answer is 111 years old, then you’re correct!

The Oldest Fire Station Just Got A Minor Makeover

The oldest fire station in Penang is still in operation but it has become a tourism hotspot as well. Recently, the signboard has been changed to restore the original design of the building. If you’ve seen the big red signboard before, well now it’s been changed to “Central Fire Station 1908” in large black fonts. This “Central Fire Station 1908” in large black fonts signage is the original and was first used 111 years ago.

Besides that, this fire station has been distinguished as one of the George Town Unesco World Heritage Site under Category 1. Hence, the signboard change was to abide by the George Town World Heritage Site Special Area Plan. Moreover, the building will be maintained accordingly to obey the orders of the special site plan.

Did any of you realize that there is a combination of different structural design to this building? The four-storey tower is Mughal-style and there are hints of Edwardian era architecture. So whenever you pass by this fire station, do take a moment to appreciate it as it’s been around longer than any of us reading this.
